Revisit the Eccles Theater
A Look Back at the Eccles Theater—Nearly a Decade Later
While digging through some old hard drives this week, I stumbled upon a series of images that stopped me in my tracks. It’s hard to believe these photos were taken almost ten years ago. Time has a way of slipping by, but certain moments—like this one—bring it all rushing back.
These images are from the early days of the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Theater in downtown Salt Lake City. At the time, the building was still shiny and new, full of promise and anticipation for what it would bring to the city’s arts and culture scene. Now, as it approaches its 10-year anniversary, it’s become an iconic part of Salt Lake’s downtown landscape and a beloved venue for world-class productions.
Over the years, we’ve had the pleasure of attending countless performances at the Eccles—Broadway shows, concerts, dance productions—you name it. The energy inside the theater is always electric, and it’s clear the space was thoughtfully designed to elevate both the performance and the audience experience.
What makes these particular images special is the vantage point. This isn’t a view most people get to see—unless you’re performing. Being behind the curtain or looking out from the wings offers a completely different perspective on the space. It’s a reminder of all the work, talent, and preparation that goes into every show before the lights come up.
Whether you’re a longtime fan of the theater or just discovering it, I thought some of you might enjoy this unique glimpse into its earlier days. It’s always fascinating to look back and see how far things have come—and this set of images is a small celebration of that journey.
Here’s to nearly ten years of unforgettable performances at the Eccles—and to many more ahead.
